This 9-day festival has taken place annually at the end of May since 1979. The founding aim was to bring international performers of the highest quality to a region containing many scattered rural communities that would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience such talent.

Since then, this region has produced some of its own talent of international standing and the festival is proud to be able to present these artistes from time to time. The Festival offers a wide range of events: music – including classical, jazz and folk, dance, theatre, literary, children’s events, plus the visual arts and films. The growing number of children’s events in recent years plus a revitalised literary programme added to our strong music, dance and theatre tradition has, enhance the programme.

Events take place in a range of venues throughout the region, from large to small, formal to informal, urban to rural.
